Hotel stays with pets: a calm check-in checklist
Hotels are short, weird stays for pets. A 10-minute room setup, a clear bathroom rotation, and respectful hallway behavior turn a stressful stay into an uneventful one.

Quick answer: On check-in: confirm pet policy and fees, ask about quietest room placement, set up food and water away from the door, crate or designate a calm spot, plan bathroom rotation, never leave a pet alone in the room unless explicitly authorized, leash discipline in hallways.
Before arrival
- Book a pet-friendly hotel — confirm policy on the phone, not just on the website
- Ask about fees, weight limits, breed restrictions, and which floor pets are placed on
- Request a room away from elevators if the pet is reactive
- Bring proof of current vaccinations — some hotels ask
- Pack a portable bed, food bowls, water bottles, leash, medications, waste bags
The 10-minute room setup
- Walk the room with the leash on. Block escape gaps under furniture.
- Find the safest spot away from the door — many pets bolt when housekeeping enters
- Set up food and water on a towel away from the bed
- Put the bed or crate in a corner
- Hang the Do Not Disturb sign whenever the pet is alone (if allowed) or when you are out of sight
- Photograph any pre-existing damage so housekeeping does not bill it to you
Hallway and lobby rules
Short leash, calm pace, polite framing for strangers (“please ask before petting”). Many guests appreciate well-behaved pets; some are uncomfortable. The leash and the framing do the diplomacy.
Bathroom rotation
Identify the designated pet-relief area on check-in. Walk the dog before settling in, every 4 to 6 hours during the day, before bed, and first thing in the morning. Carry waste bags. Cats need a litter box in the room — bring a small disposable one if your usual is too big.
Leaving the pet alone
Most hotels prohibit leaving pets unattended in rooms. Some allow it crated. Confirm at check-in. Use crate-trained pets only; an anxious uncrated pet can damage the room and risk a vet emergency.
How Driyu fits
A Driyu pet profile carries vaccine summary, microchip info, contact, and the travel-reachable phone in one record. If the pet slips out of an unfamiliar door, the finder reaches the right phone.

Frequently asked questions
Are pet fees refundable?
Usually not. Pet fees are separate from the room rate and rarely refundable, similar to resort fees. Confirm before booking.
Can I leave a barking dog alone in the room?
No. Hotel staff will often call the room or escort the pet to a kennel. Anxious dogs should not be left alone in unfamiliar rooms.
Do all pet-friendly hotels charge extra?
Most do. Some independent or boutique hotels do not. La Quinta historically allowed pets without fees, though policies vary by location.
Should I bring my pet’s food?
Yes. Switching food in an unfamiliar setting can cause GI upset. Bring familiar food in measured daily portions.
